District Snacks
Brand Identity | Packaging Design | Format & Flavor Extensions | Product Renderings & Mock-ups
What do you do when a LGBTQ founder comes to you with a branding and packaging brief for his nut-butter brand as direct as this: “My current branding is too generic and doesn't show off my personality. I do like that it is bright but in an effort for simplicity and looking clean, it doesn't stand out. My friends call me very ‘extra’ as you can see on my social media.”
We couldn’t resist. We checked out his Instagram. As we got to know the founder of District Snacks, we found a colorful expressive world. We loved how fully he was living his truth, with full-fun and in full-color. But none of this translated to his brand world or product packaging.
We knew our assignment: Get this generic brand out of the closet. Turn up the extra. Let that rainbow shine. Bring on the queens. Drop that disco ball. Let’s get this party started. It’s time to sparkle!
District Snacks pays tribute to its roots - Washington D.C. It’s important for the founder personally and for LGBTQ rights, because these are where laws are made. But, we didn’t hold onto much of the original branding. So the Washington D.C. monument icon in the logo had to go.
We replaced it with a sparkling disco ball to communicate the “disco party” vibe of the brand’s launch party. We paired the brandmark with retro typography, inspired by disco vinyl records from the 70’s.
We were inspired by drag and LGBTQ pride to create a brand world where drag queens rule. Groovy, extra, fun drag queens own the label as they would the stage. And every drag queen owns her own flavor. Her style and personality dictate the vibe, especially with her fabulous hair.
